I’ve also been wondering what I’ll do with all this digital stuff I’ve accumulated 😅 and I also have batches of files and images that are just sitting, potentially irretrievably, in some old outdated hard drive.

My mother was recently looking through my late dad’s things and we were both like, “What did he intend to do with all these old ass business cards???” And yet it felt so weird to just toss them so they’re still sitting the box we found them in? Why are we like this lol

It’s nice to hear from you again!

This is really good, thanks a lot. It almost makes me want to get those Hi-8 videos that I took of my kids nearly 30 years ago and get them converted to digital … will they match up to my memories of those times? Or are they better preserved in the black amber of the cassette case, inscrutable but for the faded label, “Pokaygon Family Vacation 1993”?

Makes me think of everyone whose ever permanently deleted old social accounts - myself included - after getting older and not wanting to hang onto the account anymore. Really great essay and hit a chord!

I’ve got exactly 3 dead Tumblr accounts in the ether and have wondered what my last MySpace mood song was before I abandoned it, but in general they probably read like a journal you found from high school: nostalgic but not that relevant.

Great read. I recently archived my livejournal and realized the Wayback Machine archived my DailyBooth. Even that, though, won’t properly download and my support request is probably buried under plenty of other more important requests. Bummer, but goes along with the point of your post!
